Wheel and axle

The wheel and axle is a simple machine composed of a wheel rigidly connected to a smaller axle, allowing the wheel to rotate concentrically around the axle. This mechanical system operates on the principle of torque and leverage, converting rotational force into linear force, or vice versa. By applying force to the circumference of the wheel, an effort can be exerted over a greater distance than the direct axle length, thereby reducing the required effort force relative to the load, and providing a mechanical advantage. The efficiency and effectiveness of this combination depend on the ratio of the wheel's radius to the axle's radius, which determines the gear ratio and thus the magnitude of the force multiplication.
