Stomach

The stomach is a muscular, J-shaped organ that serves as a critical component of the digestive system. Its primary functions include acting as a temporary reservoir for ingested food and initiating the chemical breakdown of macromolecules. The inner lining secretes gastric juices, which are highly acidic and contain enzymes responsible for commencing protein digestion. Through rhythmic muscular contractions, food material is thoroughly mixed with these digestive secretions, transforming the meal into a liquid, semi-digested slurry known as chyme. This chyme is gradually released through the pyloric sphincter into the small intestine, where nutrient absorption is completed.
