Sling (weapon)

A sling is a simple mechanical throwing weapon, consisting typically of a cord or strap anchored to a handle or loop. Its function is to launch a projectile, such as a stone or projectile weight, at high velocity through the principles of stored potential and kinetic energy. When the projectile is rapidly accelerated by the whipping motion of the material, the kinetic energy is transferred efficiently to the projectile. The efficiency of the weapon is directly related to the material properties of the launching cord and the manner in which the force is applied by the operator, enabling the launching of projectiles that can achieve considerable range and terminal velocity with minimal required energy input.
