Scarlet fever

Scarlet fever is a manifestation of infection caused by strains of *Streptococcus pyogenes*. The condition is characterized by a diffuse, erythematous rash and associated symptoms due to the production of an erythrogenic toxin released by the bacterium. This toxin stimulates an inflammatory response in the superficial layers of the skin, leading to the distinctive "sandpapery" texture and flushing. Diagnosis is typically based on the presence of the causative agent or evidence of its toxins in bodily fluids. Management focuses on addressing the underlying bacterial infection through antimicrobial therapy to prevent complications, as prompt treatment is necessary to control systemic spread and prevent secondary issues such as glomerulonephritis or acute rheumatic fever.
