Ice shelf

Ice shelves are vast, floating extensions of grounded ice sheets, forming crucial components of the cryosphere. They are massive barriers of perennial ice that float upon the ocean surface, having formed through the overflow of continental glaciers. Physically, these shelves play a critical role in regulating the stability and flow rate of the larger continental ice masses behind them; by impeding the discharge of grounded ice, they can stabilize the internal dynamics of the ice sheet.
