Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common, generally mild viral exanthem of uncertain etiology, most often caused by an enterovirus such as coxsackievirus. The illness is highly contagious and transmits primarily through the fecal-oral route or contact with infectious secretions. Clinically, the disease manifests with a low-grade fever and the development of characteristic painful oral lesions, alongside non-pruritic rashes on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Although typically self-limiting and rarely severe, the condition can cause considerable discomfort and requires supportive care until the viral load decreases and the lesions resolve.
