Coma

A coma is a medical condition characterized by a state of profound unconsciousness, reflecting severe dysfunction of the brain, particularly the reticular activating system and the cerebral hemispheres. This state involves a dramatic reduction or complete loss of responsiveness to external stimuli, including pain, sound, and sight. The underlying causes are varied and can include metabolic imbalances, infections, hemorrhage, trauma, or the effects of sedative medications. Monitoring a patient in a coma requires continuous assessment of vital signs and neurological status to determine the level of brain activity and to identify the root cause of the impairment. Prognosis is highly dependent on the etiology, duration, and underlying cerebral integrity.
