Caffeine

Caffeine is a naturally occurring methylxanthine alkaloid widely consumed as a stimulant. Chemically, it functions as a central nervous system stimulant primarily by acting as an antagonist to adenosine receptors. Adenosine is a neuromodulator whose accumulation promotes drowsiness and fatigue, and by blocking these receptors, caffeine prevents the binding of adenosine, thereby increasing neuronal firing rates and promoting wakefulness. Its effects are widespread, contributing to alertness and enhanced cognitive function, and it is derived from various plant sources. Dosages and metabolic rates can vary significantly across individuals, making the concentration and physiological impact variable.
