Burn

A burn represents physical damage to the skin and underlying tissues resulting from excessive heat, electricity, chemical agents, or radiation. The severity of a burn is classified based on the depth of tissue injury, categorized generally as superficial, partial-thickness, or full-thickness. Superficial burns affect only the epidermis, causing redness and minimal damage, while partial-thickness burns penetrate the dermis, causing blistering and requiring careful monitoring. Full-thickness burns destroy the epidermis and dermis, often damaging subcutaneous tissue, which necessitates advanced wound care and grafting for healing. Management of thermal injuries involves immediate decontamination, fluid replacement to prevent shock, meticulous wound cleaning, pain management, and the prevention of infection to facilitate the natural healing processes of the compromised integumentary system.
